Mmmmmmezcal...

Raylean, Carlos and I hit up La Botica for drinks on Saturday evening, drinks in this case not being chelitas, but rather caballitos de mezcal with a beer chaser. My first experience with mezcal was in Oaxaca and it did not go down easy. I swear it was like 80 proof, with a knock-you-over the noggin smoke flavor. So I was keen to try a wider variety of mezcales and figure out once and for all if this drink is for me.
Carlos was the perfect guide to this experience, since he was in the middle of hitting up every cantina in Mexico City for an article in Donde Ir. That´s some fortitude.
I started out with a Pollito, because the waitress said it was on the lighter side. It was, however it was also younger/greener, which makes the flavors stronger from my point of view. Carlos kindly urged an añejo upon me and I stuck with those more mellow flavors for the rest of the evening.
Moral of the story: I´ll keep drinking mezcal, but I have to admit, I might just be a snotty 100% blue agave tequila girl in the long run. And if it´s mezcal, it´s añejo for me!
